Ribellione banda Article November 14, When people think of popular reggae bands from Southern California, Rebelution is not usually the first name that comes up. But maybe it should be. The group, which has nearly , Facebook fans, started in in Santa Barbara, where its original five members met while studying at UCSB.
They are known for catchy party jams with lyrics that often range into the political. A second singer-guitarist, Matt Velasquez, left the band before they made it big. At the time, they were in debt to make their debut album and, according to Williams, Velasquez had simply grown tired of the rigorous touring life. But they never play it live.
The band's fifth album, Falling Into Place , came out in June, but Williams confesses that it nearly didn't happen. We wrote some songs in Jamaica, some in SoCal and some on the tour bus. One day, he tried playing a guitar and sang. His only singing experience was in the car. At singing times of his life, previously, he felt that it was so natural to him as if he had been doing it all his life.
They called themselves Funk Unit. Matt thought they were so good. But, now, he thinks they were not as much as he thought. Then, he realized he wanted to be in a more defined band. Four years later, Rebelution was born with three other musicians in Santa Barbara, California.
It was compared to a similar band called Sublime. An artist needs not to be like another but his or herself. Their musical sound just happened to have a reggae vibe in front of their extensive taste in a variety of music. Rebelution recorded a 5-track demo. Their first tour happened in Hawaii. After that, they were driven to write more originals that made the demo evolve into a full-length album. Matt is well-rounded that his musical interests expanded through the years. He predicted that Rebelution was just going to perform reggae to his satisfaction in the beginning.
Rebelution has followed in the footsteps of fellow reggae revivalist bands Pepper from Hawaii , The Expendables from Santa Cruz , and Slightly Stoopid from San Diego to amass a throng of loving fans, and it was evident at the show Thursday. Rebelution supported the Expendables at another sold-out HOB show back in November, and they received a good reaction then, but nothing close to how they were received this time around. This time, the band peppered in multiple new songs, which indicated growth in their songwriting department.
Rebelution is becoming a seasoned touring band, and the result of that is evident when witnessing their live show, which has a very rich, full sound accompanying the music. Rebelution sticks with one kind of song: rhythmic, keyboard-driven, and relaxing. They are the perfect soundtrack to chilling on the beach with a six-pack. If this show was any indication of their future, Rebelution is on the rise, and will only continue to amass success like their peers and friends in the Expendables.
This is a good time for bands of this genre: the Expendables are getting bigger and bigger, and Slightly Stoopid recently played a sold-out show with the Expendables and Bad Brains at the newly-reopened Palladium in December.
Their combination of reggae, hip-hop, and rock have made them a favorite of music lovers all over town. Stemming form a foundation of local support, Rebelution soared into iTunes Reggae top 10 album downloads , amongst some lofty company.
Lofty like Bob, Stephen and Damien Marley. Bassist Marley D. Williams has been listening to reggae since he was in the womb. A year later, in , the group established its identity as Rebelution.
