Why was leigh bodden cut
Now, if you have an issue with Bodden's high salary, I'm with you there. Honestly though, the Lions are going to have to live with overpaying Bodden, and hope that he lives up to earning that much. Fisher sure isn't starting cornerback material. So if the Lions are serious about cutting Bodden, they'd first better make damn sure they have a star free agent corner ready to come in and replace him OR draft a cornerback in the first round of the draft.
I just shake my head at this move. It's reckless as anything I've seen from this team. The Lions have already released Mike Furrey, one of their hardest working players on offense, and now they're going to cut arguably their most talented defensive player as well. I would strongly propose that Bodden at least be allowed to show what he can do in Schwartz and Cunningham's defensive scheme.
If Bodden is cut now, Detroit is dooming themselves to again watch another former Lion go on to greener pastures elsewhere and rebound with a dominating year. That, and they would also be taking nearly a percent loss on the Shaun Rogers trade.

Bodden was unhappy, injured, and the Patriots did not think it was worth their time to have Bodden on the IR for two seasons so, if and when he returned, he would have not played football for two seasons. By furiousd on By wildcat61 on He still gets payed by the Pats I believe, for this year.
If the Pats IR him he is still on his 4 year deal, or whatever it is. So basically the Pats cut his contract short. How this is legal I have no idea. But I guess this way if the Pats want him back they can sign him to a lesser contract. By JDot on By TFBismywingman on They can IR him then cut him before next season and be on hook for virtually nothing. They still pay him this year if he is not claimed.
No savings. Even injured, Bodden played slot well enough. Bodden was definitely going to be cut irregardless of his injury by next season due to high salary anyway. Maybe medical staff made decision and not BB. If it was decided by medical people he needed surgery then BB releasing him makes sense given the high cost of the salary and better for Bodden also.
By prioris on At least by releasing him you enter in the possibility he will be claimed on waivers and the team would then save some money. By Oughat on Score a point for BB. Hayensworth, this is all I gotta say, two gap, three gap, four gap pr whatever gap in ascending order.
Look, at the end of the day, the one thing I think Bill has always done, and has continued to do the entire time I've been here, is make decisions that are in the best interest of the team. I enjoy being around Leigh, I like him as a guy, and it's always tough to see those kind of decisions have to be made.
It is what it is and we're going to move forward, and hopefully we can get past this relatively quick. I'm sure we will. Asked about the report at his Friday morning news conference, Belichick said the team did not have an announcement at that time. When he was asked later about Bodden's play this season, Belichick said: "I think we'll skip that one right now.
Bodden had been battling a thumb injury and was listed as limited in practice this week with the injury. Because Bodden's release comes after the trade deadline, he will have to pass through waivers before becoming a free agent. The Patriots have had Devin McCourty and Arrington as their starting corners, with Bodden the third man, followed by Molden in the dime. Rookie Ras-I Dowling is also on the depth chart, but he's been sidelined since Week 2 with a hip injury he's doubtful for Sunday , while Phillip Adams -- who has been on and off the roster -- adds another layer of depth.
The Patriots now have an open roster spot, which could go to one of their players on the physically unable to perform list -- running back Kevin Faulk or defensive linemen Ron Brace or Brandon Deaderick. As for Bodden's time in New England, his first season was his best. After enduring the Lions' winless season the year before, Bodden was revived with the Patriots and was the team's most consistent corner, leading the club with 17 passes defended while starting on the right side.
The Patriots will pay the remainder of that if he is not claimed on waivers, which reflects how Belichick wasn't pleased with Bodden's performance -- or perhaps his willingness to accept the third corner role -- as he is willing to eat the salary.
