How long should a mooring pennant be

Mainly, you don't want enough space that the pendant can wrap up on the rig and chafe against either the chain or the barnacles on the bottom of the mooring ball. Alternativly, you might get a ball that has a tube up it to accept the top chain right through to the top of the ball. A shackle across the next to last link will hold the top chain up and the pendant is attached conventionally. The disadvantage of this system is that the chain inside the tube will be subject to air induced electrolysis same thing that gets the top few inches of you anti-fouling paint or the waterline plates of steel boats so you want to watch that.

Double or single pendant is mostly a matter of preference. I like single. Double gives the illusion of greater strength but doubles the number of things that can go wrong.

If one side parts and you've only got a siezing holding it all together, the whole rig may give. However, some boats need doble pendants just to behave themselvs at the mooring. If you go double, be sure that each alone is fully adequate. The harbor is Sorrento Harbor hopefully on Frenchman Bay. I will contact the harbormaster to see what the requirements are for boats of similar displacement and length. So, let me see if I have this straight.

In essence, a weight of some kind engine block, concrete, mushroom, etc serves as the anchor for the mooring. A heavy chain the lenght of 1. Attached to this swivel shackle is light chain, equal to the max water depth, which runs up to the surface and is attached to a mooring bouy - either at the bouy's base where a steel rod runs up through the bouy, or simply the light chain runs through a tube in the bouy to the bouy's top, where a shackle exists.

The mooring pennants, which are 2. Did I get that pretty straight? Questions: Where do you put the swivel shackle? I'm not sure I get the concept of one pennant vs two - seems like two is more "even" - that if you used only one mooring penant, you'd have a tough time deciding which side of the boat to attach it to? If you don't use thimbles, do you use rings?

I'm very excited to have received my first mooring permit today however I need some assistance. Based on the below regulations I have a few questions from the experts.

Hurricanes making landfall in locations along the Eastern Seaboard have wrecked hundreds of boats over the past twenty years, many of which were driven ashore with their complete and intact mooring systems still attached. Weather forecasters predict that we are now in a period where we can expect more storms of greater destructive force, storms like Harvey, Irma and Maria that caused tremendous damage in Just how large does a mooring system need to be if your boat is caught in extreme weather?

West Advisor Articles. Brilliant, thanks so much. I've now got an idea of what my shopping list will contain. Hi, Thanks for the interesting post. Would you have a drawing or sketch of the setup, trying to imagine what it looks like!

Do you sell these BTW? I think the essence of his mooring will be 2 pennants each with a loop spliced into the top to go over cleat or sampson post and the other end spliced onto a thimble.

This can be steel stainless steel or plastic. Obviously plastic won't last so long. The thimble distributes the pressure of the rope onto a hard material reducing chafing. Use one or 2 shackles at the chain but do make sure the pins are moused. Just tightening is not enough as jerking can unscrew them.
